Listening and speaking using CALL

Listening and speaking are two important skills in language component. Listening activity can be done by using multimedia. Text support, hyperlinked glossaries and translations are widely used in listening activity. Punctuated presentation is designed specifically for CALL. This programme demands learners’ attention since it interrupts the flow and ask questions along the way. Besides, learners can check their own progress.

CALL also can be used by the learners in learning speaking. There are two ways to learn speaking, which are synchronous and asynchronous. By using synchronous, learners can use real-time chat rooms, MSN & Yahoo Messenger, Skype and Social networking websites. On the other hand, voice mail, attaching sound files to e-mails and podcasts can be used using asynchronous. In Spoken Language Curriculum, CALL integrates the usage of speech analysis and training in phonology. Teachers and learners can use speech output, video and hypermedia enhancements to reinforce language learning activities.

Phonology provides various types of visual input to model or supplement audio input. There are some desirable features of graphic display of computer-generated feedback on intonation.

1. Clear and interpretable visual image without too much complexity or detail in display.

2. Real-time feedback.

3. An indication in the display of the user's input in relation to the baseline or the essential parameters for target performance.

4. Inexpensive, reliable, and easy-to-operate equipment.
